What is virtual outpatient treatment?
Getting to a clinic isn't always realistic. Long commutes, work shifts, kids at home and no reliable transportation keep a lot of people from getting the care they need. Our virtual programs remove that barrier.
Virtual treatment at Roots isn't a recorded video or an app. You join live group and individual sessions over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, with the same clinical team and the same trauma-focused approach you'd get at our Long Beach clinic. You practice new skills in your real life, day by day, with support you can count on every evening.
Two levels of care, one team
Everyone starts with a free assessment. Based on your needs, our clinicians will recommend the level of care that fits, and you can move between levels as you progress.

Virtual Outpatient (OP)

Frequently asked questions
Is virtual treatment as effective as in-person?
For many people, yes. Research on telehealth for substance use and mental health treatment shows outcomes comparable to in-person care, and it often helps people stay in treatment longer because it's easier to attend.
What's the difference between OP and IOP?
The main difference is time and structure. IOP includes more group sessions each week for people who need more support. OP has fewer hours and works well as a step-down or for people with a stable foundation. Your clinician will recommend the right level after your assessment.
Is my information private?
Yes. Sessions take place on a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, and your participation is kept confidential in accordance with federal privacy law.
Can I switch between virtual and in-person care?
Yes. Many patients combine the two or move between them as their needs change. Talk with your care team about what works best for you.
I'm on Medi-Cal but don't live in LA County. Can I join?
Medi-Cal coverage for our virtual programs is currently limited to LA County residents. Call us anyway. If we're not the right fit, we'll help you find a program that is.
