Alcohol Use in Long Beach

Long Beach is the third largest city in Southern California. It is also the second-largest city in Los Angeles County. It has a population of over 450,000. It is known for a number of surf-perfect beaches. The party scene along these beaches is a haven for alcohol and drug use. Among other substances with high addiction rates, alcohol still remains as the most commonly abused substance in California. Alcohol use in the region is the second leading cause of premature deaths and disabilities. In Los Angeles County, the high rate of binge drinking is one of the factors for the high number of motorcycle crashes, injuries, emergency room visits and deaths recorded in a year

Acknowledging that one has a problem is the first, and for many the hardest, step in the treatment process as the fear of the unknown will deter many from ever seeking help. Understanding the process is an important part of making the decision to reach out.

Long Beach’s Alcohol Use Disorder and Binge Drinking

What is Alcohol Use Disorder?

Alcohol use disorder occurs with an excessive consumption of alcohol which triggers a series of chemical changes in the brain. Specifically, at least five to ten times of the normal level of dopamine is released to the brain with alcohol use. Dopamine is a chemical neurotransmitter that stimulates pleasurable feelings when an individual engages in an enjoyable activity. To get more of this feeling, there is a tendency to repeat drinking alcohol at the expense of the harm it causes to the body.

Alcohol use disorder is a disease that causes a person to have a strong craving to drink alcohol. Once started, he loses self-control and couldn’t stop drinking. When not drinking, that person becomes anxious and irritable.

What is Binge Drinking?

On the other hand, binge drinking occurs when one drinks so much alcohol at once that the  level of blood alcohol concentration reaches at 0.08% or more. Binge drinking for men means having 5 or more drinks within a few hours. For women, it takes 4 or more drinks within a few hours. Binge drinkers might not have an alcohol use disorder but they are at higher risk of getting one.

Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder in Long Beach

Here at Roots through Recovery, we do not take the cookie-cutter approach in creating a treatment plan for our patients undergoing alcohol addiction. It’s highly individualized taking into consideration our patients’ specific needs. We conduct a thorough assessment of their history of alcohol and drug use, family and personal issues and treatment history. We find a treatment that would be appropriate for them whether it’s with us or with another program.

We also take into consideration that those with alcohol addiction have co-occurring mental disorders. For us to provide the right treatment for them, we make accurate dual diagnosis to address both your mental health problems and alcohol use disorder.

If the patient is not yet ready for the treatment plans, we are here to guide him and his family by providing intervention referrals and resources. During the detox process, we will provide professional assistance at our partner alcohol rehabs. We know that leaving behind the addiction to alcohol can come with such a psychological burden. It is also a dangerous process.  The patient should not deal with this process alone.

We offer a variety of rehabilitation programs which includes partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient program, and outpatient alcohol rehab.

Highly intensive level of care given, we place the patient in a hospital for 6 hours of treatment each day within the week. This program offers additional support for the patient to develop skills and tools needed for their recovery. This includes both group and individual therapy with medical and psychiatric services.

Requires 3 to 5 days a week of high level of care to help them develop a daily routine so they can reintegrate in their communities. The patients can go back to school and work through case management and flexible scheduling.

He should attend outpatient alcohol rehab program which includes groups and individual therapy from one to five days per week.

We don’t just leave our patients behind after going through rehabilitation. We continuously care for them. We provide them with resources to help prevent relapse and invite them to participate in alumni and family events.
