What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

To ensure sobriety, it is important for people in recovery to seek care and guidance when necessary. This is essential for avoiding relapse and other struggles along the journey. At Roots Recovery, we continue to offer help, treatment, and other services when needed to ensure optimal results.

At Roots, the personalized team helps clients – both current and previous – to develop healthy habits that help them foster a happy lifestyle outside of alcohol and/or substances. One of these programs offered is the partial hospitalization program (PHP). This program helps those on their recovery journey maintain abstinence while offering supportive services.

What Is the Partial Hospitalization Program?

The PHP at Roots Recovery is known as day treatment. It is a program that provides a high level of care and allows clients to reside in their homes or other environments while still receiving treatment. The staff at Roots Recovery understands that transitioning from full treatment to daily life can be a struggle for those in recovery. Often those who complete treatment and try to transition into their routines find themselves exposed to substances or alcohol, tempting them to relapse into old, destructive habits.

Detox and inpatient treatments are not always long-term answers for everyone. Everyone in recovery is different, and a PHP is a viable option for sustaining longevity in recovery and abstinence. The PHP offers care that helps clients gradually enter their daily routines again. With more intensive ongoing treatment, longevity is possible.

The PHP model is backed by 30 years of research that supports its efficacy as an alternative to inpatient programs. The PHP is one of the most successful treatments in terms of family involvement. While providing help for the client and providing the most personalized care, clients’ families are also involved in the process. Being involved helps families understand the recovery journey and support their loved one’s goals both in and outside of treatment.

Partial Hospitalization Program and Personalized Client Care

A treatment plan is personalized for each client. The plan is designed to help them learn skills for their daily lives and help them resume life outside of treatment. Treatment runs from Monday through Friday for six hours each day. This includes both group and individual therapies, family counseling, and medication monitoring.

Clients learn about the addiction cycle through these services, gaining an understanding of their emotional and physical triggers. Especially when experiencing post-acute withdrawal symptoms in recovery, understanding compulsion and the addiction cycle is key to recovery success. Clients practice healthy coping mechanisms, learn about their triggers and how to overcome them, and solidify a relapse prevention and safety plan to maximize recovery results.

What Are the Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program?

The PHP allows clients to receive follow-up care for mental health and substance use disorders, helping them avoid relapsing. By utilizing a PHP, people more successfully foster an independent, healthy, and happy life in recovery. This program is also entirely personalized to each client, just as other services at Roots Recovery are. With a personalized treatment plan, clients find the most success in their recovery journey.

Unlike many inpatient programs, clients are not required to have 24-hour supervision when in this program. PHPs allow clients to live their lives in their own homes or environments while still receiving treatment. This is important for clients trying to integrate themselves back into their everyday lives. Receiving guidance through this transition encourages clients to resist alcohol or substances, avoid relapse, and go on to live a healthier lifestyle overall. This is a controlled environment for clients to learn healthy coping behaviors, receive treatment and care, and integrate themselves back into daily life.

After completing treatment, many clients at Roots have experienced a happier lifestyle overall. Our surveys show that one year after treatment, 55% of clients reported feeling anywhere between fair to excellent. A whopping 43% of clients remained either entirely abstinent or mostly abstinent (meaning they fully recovered from a relapse).

Families and Integrative Care With Partial Hospitalization Programs

Involving the families in PHP also helps clients develop a greater support system. Addiction affects not just one individual but an entire family system, so families need services too. And when families understand the recovery process, it helps clients be more successful.

The family counseling aspect of PHP helps families understand what their loved one is going through and what support they need to continue living a healthy and happy life outside of substances. Also in family counseling services, professionals work with the family to help them modify their own behaviors to support the loved one in recovery. Integrating this family model helps clients interact with their families better and develop stronger relationships to maximize the results of their continued recovery.

This integration of the family adheres to the integrative care philosophy at Roots Recovery. We prioritize including others in the recovery journey and one’s treatment plan. At Roots, an interdisciplinary team is brought together to ensure the best care for each client’s unique needs. With cohesive and seamless care, clients find more success in recovery. Introducing families into the mix enhances the care and support clients are given as they go through the recovery process. It is important to seek help and find the services that fit into one’s life as seamlessly as possible. It could easily be argued that PHPs are an essential part of a successful recovery journey.

Here at Roots Recovery, we offer clients the opportunity to partake in a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Our PHP is a program that provides a high level of personalized care while allowing clients to remain in the comfort of their homes or living environments. This program is run for a set number of hours during the day, helping clients transition back into their usual routines while in recovery. Our PHP offers longevity in recovery through intensive care, resulting in optimal recovery results for clients. This program also involves families in the recovery process, which strengthens the client’s support system. “I am so grateful to be an alumni of Roots. Roots took me from my darkest of places, to the brightest and most beautiful part of life I've ever lived. They genuinely care about their clients. You will not be a number or a paycheck here. After discharging in February, I still receive help and words of wisdom whenever needed. Roots helped me battle things I'd been struggling with for over 14 years and finally put them behind me. I love roots with all my heart, and always will.”
