Sobrevivientes de trauma/TEPT
When your inner world has been painfully overwhelming, it’s hard to imagine a life free from the pain. Sounds, scents, images and feelings can call up memories of abuse, neglect or life-altering events. Sometimes we can’t even recognize the triggers as these painful events replay in our minds, keeping us up at night or preventing us from doing the things we love.
Trauma and PTSD survivors often learn to adapt and develop responses that seem like self-care, but are actually coping mechanisms to avoid or numb the pain. These coping mechanisms serve us well, until they don’t. But there is more to life than just getting through the day. Resolving your trauma will allow you to break free from the binds of your past.
Roots through Recovery’s Clinical Director, Diana Kang, PsyD. says, “Trauma does not discriminate and can impact anyone. Everyone has a different perception of trauma, and how it is experienced in the body and mind varies greatly from person to person.” The difficult thing about trauma is that it is based on a person’s experience and no two people experience events the same way. This is why two people can survive a car crash, grow up in an abusive home together, or serve a tour of combat duty, and have varying degrees of trauma, or even PTSD.
People coping with the effects of a traumatic event, and may be suffering from PTSD, experience various symptoms including:
Re-experiencing
- Flashbacks
- Bad dreams
- Frightening thoughts
Avoidance
- Staying away from places, events, or objects that are reminders of the experience
- Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the traumatic event
Arousal and reactivity
- Being easily startled
- Feeling tense or “on edge”
- Having difficulty sleeping, and/or having angry outbursts
Cognition and mood
- Trouble remembering key features of the traumatic event
- Negative thoughts about oneself or the world
- Distorted feelings like guilt or blame
- Loss of interest in enjoyable activities
